Ellsworth Elks Support Wounded Warrior Project

On August 25, 2010, members of the Ellsworth Elks Lodge held a fish fry and entertainment in support of the Wounded Warrior project.

The Lodge has agreed to offer their help to the Wounded Warrior project whenever they are in the Acadia area. This year, through the assistance of member Sue Soper, who works for a lobster co-op in the Winter Harbor area. She was approached by Kelly Bernier, who works at the resource center at the old navy base in Winter Harbor. Bernier asked if there was anything that the co-op could do for the "Warriors?" She set up lobster boat rides and trap pulling, and have been doing this for two years.

Soper then asked if there was anything that the Elks could do for the program, and the dinner and entertainment was the recommendation. The Ellsworth Elks have agreed to do this whenever they are in the area. Entertainment for the event was donated by a Past Exalted Ruler and his music partner. (Will Raney and Mr. Lydick)

This was the first support dinner for the project, and it was very well attended. According to Rene' Wiesner, wife of Exalted Ruler Jeff Wiesner, "Some of our vets had a hard time with this dinner because the they were shocked at how young the guys were," referring to the Wounded Warriors that attended the event.

The Wounded Warrior Project believes in the power of nature and recreation to help warriors dealing with combat stress.  Project Odyssey, an outdoor rehabilitative retreat that combines adventure challenges with opportunities for peer support and group processing, was created to support warriors in their recovery from combat stress.

Recreational experiences ranging from rock climbing in the Black Hills of South Dakota to herding cattle on Wildcatter Ranch, encourage personal growth among participants and team building within the warrior community.

In conjunction with the National Park Service, Project Odyssey takes place on a variety of geographical locations over the course of five days.  Past event sites include Wildcatter Resort & Ranch in Graham, Texas; Marriott Cocoa Beach in Miami, Florida; National Ability Center, Park City, Utah; Acadia National Park in Maine.  Each location offers a unique experience that is different from the last and varies based on geographical resources.

Partnering with the Vet Centers across the country, Wounded Warrior Project recruits combat warriors from across the country who are currently enrolled in counseling services.  Odyssey allows participants to continue their therapeutic journey in a novel, dynamic setting with peers and support from Wounded Warrior Project and Vet Center professionals.

New Chicago Lodge Membership System to Debut April 2011

The Chicago Lodge Membership System, also known as CLMS will be upgraded in April 2011 to CLMS2. The new program will be web based, and is currently undergoing beta-testing.

The new system will consist of two applications. A web based application for data entry called CLMS2Web and a desktop based program for reporting and other reporting called CLMS2PC.

Conversion to the new CLMS2Web data format will happen automatically. Once a Lodge converts to CLMS2, they will no longer use CLMS1, as backups will no longer be accepted by Grand Lodge.

The new program will feature extensive help online, and "wizards" will be used throughout the program to soften the learning curve. CLMS2Web and CLMS2PC will be free for all Lodges.

+1 Program: Strategy for Growth

By G. Stephen Clarke, GL Membership Committee

The +1 Program is designed to assist the Lodges and State Associations in addressing the continuing decline in membership in the Order. The program is built around four Lodge-based strategies:

  • Build the relationship between the Member and Lodge.
  • Instill pride in membership.
  • Focus all Lodge activities on recruitment, activation and retention.
  • Develop Lodge-State-Grand Lodge partnerships.

These strategies were selected as those necessary to accomplish our vision of growing Elkdom and continuing our 140- plus years of service to our communities and nation.

As the name implies, our goal is to attain a net gain of at least +1 in each Lodge by:

  • Actively recruiting new Members.
  • A retention rate of 98 percent or better.
  • Reinstating former Members in an amount equal to 10 percent of current membership.
  • Recognizing recruiters using Grand Lodge, State Association and Lodge incentive programs.
  • Effectively using the Stray Elks Program to identify and involve Members who have moved into other jurisdictions.

When implemented as outlined in the Grand Lodge Membership Program, the +1 Program is expected to grow Elkdom as pride in membership increases and positive Member/Lodge relationships develop. Partnerships developed among the Lodge, State Association and Grand Lodge will provide support for program development, implementation and improvements. A copy of the +1 brochure was included in the materials provided to Exalted Rulers at the Grand Lodge meeting in Orlando. For a copy of the brochure or help with administering the +1 program, visit the membership page of the Elks Web site or contact your Grand Lodge Area Committeeman or State Association Membership Chairperson.
